The Weather
Madeira, also known as “the flower island,” enchants visitors all year round with its mild climate, lush nature, and breathtaking landscapes. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, temperatures usually range between 18 °C and 26 °C – perfect for hiking, relaxing, and exploring. Winters are pleasantly mild, and in summer it rarely gets too hot.
Every season has its own charm.
Spring
Blooming season – ideal for hiking.
Summer
Warm, but pleasantly tempered by the sea breeze – perfect for swimming and exploring the island. Many local festivals take place.
Autumn
Soft light, a calm atmosphere, and excellent conditions for outdoor activities
Winter
Lush nature, fewer visitors, and still a mild climate – ideal for peace and relaxation.
You may have heard that it often rains on the north coast and that the south coast is always dry. However, it’s not quite that black and white. The north coast does receive slightly more rain on average, but this makes it wonderfully green, vibrant, and authentic – perfect for those who love nature and tranquility.
By the way, Porto da Cruz is located on the northeast coast, but it benefits from its sheltered position between the Penha d’Águia (Eagle Rock) and a mountain range. As a result, it surprisingly often enjoys sunny and pleasant weather. In summer, it even happens regularly that it stays dry for weeks – the clouds usually linger over the mountains.
For the same reason, it’s also rarely truly windy here. And if it does happen to rain, you often only need to drive past two mountains, and there you’ll find bright sunshine again – typical Madeira!
